Henry F. Farny was born in France in 1847 and arrived in Cincinnati in 1859. As a young artist he began as an illustrator, with his work appearing in periodicals such as Harper’s Weekly and illustrating commercial work such as posters and brochures for Cincinnati businesses. He aspired to paint portraits and spent several years traveling, working for a time in New York for the Harper Brothers, then in Europe, working and studying under master painters of the time. Upon his return to Cincinnati he pursued his art supporting himself with commercial commissions. He realized his greatest success as an artist after traveling to the American West and discovering his passion for portraying indigenous people in his paintings. #tbt View more in our Digital Library: https://digital.cincinnatilibrary.org/
