The sisters of Auschwitz by Roxane Van Iperen A really well written story about the holocaust. After using part of their house The High Nest to hide people from the Nazi’s, Jewish sisters Janny and Lien are put on the last train to Auschwitz, the same train as Anne Frank and her family. What they suffer is awful and knowing that their mother was sent to the gas chambers and how they kept going was inspirational. Throughout the book the love they had for each other and their fellow prisoners was unbelievable and yet it was that love that kept them going. Definitely worth reading and remembering how cruel life was for all imprisoned in Auschwitz.

Entangled Life is more than just a book about mushrooms it’s a book about life, the universe, and everything. Merlin Sheldrake (if you have a name like Merlin Sheldrake I think it’s basically mandatory that you become a roving mycologist) has constructed a picture of a world beneath our feet that’s as compelling as any novel I’ve read this year. The son of English parapsychologist Rupert Sheldrake, Merlin’s fascination with fungi began in childhood. My fascination with fung...i began when I read Entangled Life. The book goes beyond button mushrooms and fairy toadstools. Its scope is vast, and the questions it raises have truly global ramifications. Entangled Life talks about decomposition, fermentation, and evolution in ways that will make you reconsider things you always took for granted. Although the fungi take centre-stage in this book, a picture of Merlin shines through in the personal anecdotes and brilliant metaphors which pepper his book. It’s clear that Sheldrake is an expert in his field, but he is also a very fine writer Entangled Life contains some of the best prose I’ve read in a very long time, drawing on a body of information as broad as the massive mycelial networks discussed in the book. Sheldrake quotes from Tom Waits and from Nature, from personal experience and from The Lord of the Rings. Entangled Life is a standout piece of nonfiction writing. To say it is life-changing may be an exaggeration, but to say that it will change your outlook on the world would not be. by Niall
