Old Hartley, Whitley Bay (Ref: ACC 8063) 1851 Census returns for Hartley Township listed 1627 people but of those only 614 were present in the village itself, being 277 males and 337 females. The list of names reveals 217 in employment, or having an income, and 113 schoolchildren.76 men were colliery workers, followed by 40 seamen and fishermen. There were 37 paupers, or persons in receipt of parish relief. The village as seen in the photograph, looking up from the west, pr...obably looks much as it did when the village was taken over by Whitley & Monkseaton Urban District Council in 1935. Indeed, it scarcely changed from the 1850s, except for a slight reduction in size. The cottages on the hill were demolished by the Council, who built Hartley Square to replace them. Coronation Row, Monkseaton (Ref WBC 35.125) Our photograph shows Coronation Row, Front Street, Monkseaton, being demolished in June 1936 to make way for the extension to the Black Horse Inn. The pub had been altered on a number of occasions since it was built in the 1790s, as evidenced by varying types of brick and stonework visible. Plans were approved for the extension in March 1936. It was believed that Coronation Row took its name from the accession of William IV in 183...0, however an 1825 guidebook to Northumberland noted that Dryden and Co had a large brewery in Monkseaton and built cottages which were probably to house their workers. These were called Coronation Row, so it seems more likely that they took their name from the coronation of George IV in 1820. If anyone has any further information, please email [email protected]
