Did you know? One of the oldest bible translation in the world is kept in Bohol Provincial Library. The bible is captioned as: La Sagrada Biblia Traducida Al Español, De La Vulgata Latina, Conforme Al Sentido De Los Santos Padres Y Expositores Catolicos, Por El Ilmo. Sr. D. Felipe Scio De San Miguel, Tomo Primero, Del Nuevo Testamento. This Bible is translated into Spanish from the Latin Vulgate by Felipe Scio de San Miguel (1738 1796). #OnThisDay January 22, 1910, Birth Anniversary of National Artists: Vicente Manansala, National Artist for Painting (1981) and Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero, National Artist for Theater (1997). Vicente S. Manansala (January 22, 1910 August 22, 1981) trained in Paris and at Otis School of Drawing in Los Angeles. His paintings are described as visions of reality teetering on the edge of abstraction. As a young boy, his talent was revealed through the copies he made of the Sagrada Fam...ilia and his mother’s portrait that he copied from a photograph. After finishing the fine arts course from the University of the Philippines, he ran away from home and later found himself at the Philippines Herald as an illustrator. It was there that Manansala developed a close association with Hernando R. Ocampo, Cesar Legaspi, and Carlos Botong Francisco, the latter being the first he admired most. For Manansala, Botong was a master of the human figure. Among the masters, Manansala professes a preference for Cezanne and Picasso whom he says have achieved a balance of skill and artistry. Vicente S. Manansala was honored as National Artist in Painting in 1981. Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero (January 22, 1910 April 28, 1995) is a teacher and theater artist whose 35 years of devoted professorship has produced the most sterling luminaries in Philippine performing arts. Twelve of his works are included in 23 college and high school textbooks and anthologies, and are also included in the Russian Encyclopedia. His plays have been the subject so far of seven Master of Arts theses in English literature. Guerrero taught and trained many notable figures in the Philippine Performing Arts: Behn Cervantes, Celia Diaz-Laurel, Joy Virata, and Joonee Gamboa and others. He was appointed as UP Dramatic Club director and served for 16 years. As founder and artistic director of the UP Mobile Theater, he pioneered the concept of theater campus tour and delivered no less than 2,500 performances in a span of 19 committed years of service. By bringing theatre to the countryside, Guerrero made it possible for students and audiences, in general, to experience the basic grammar of staging and acting in familiar and friendly ways through his plays that humorously reflect the behavior of the Filipino. In 1997, Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero was posthumously distinguished as a National Artist for Philippine Theatre. #OnThisDay October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur lands in Red Beach, Palo, Leyte, accompanied by Commonwealth government-in-exile President Sergio Osmeña and U.S. troops, which began the campaign for the liberation of the Philippines from the Imperial Japanese forces. The landing also marked the re-establishing of the Commonwealth Government on Philippine soil after years of government-in-exile in Washington D.C. President Sergio Osmeña said: General MacArthur and I ha...ve returned together to accomplish a common objective: to restore to our people peace and prosperity, freedom and happiness the enemy wantonly attacked us, interrupting our steady progress toward complete nationhood. The enemy is still on Philippine soil. It is thus our immediate purpose to destroy his power and to expel him from our country. General Douglas MacArthur agreed to leave for Australia before the Philippines surrendered to Japan. But he made a promise to the Philippine people saying I shall return. This time, upon arriving on the shore, General MacArthur waded onto the invasion beach at Leyte and delivered his prepared address into a waiting microphone: People of the Philippines: I have returned. Brigadier General Carlos P. Romulo chronicled the events of the night before landing in Leyte in his book, Osmeña and the Return to the Philippines: I see [Osmeña] vividly in recollection of that night before we landed on Leyte. President Osmeña was alone in his cabin on board the troopship, John Land. I can still see him even now, in his khaki shirt and pants, looking out from the porthole of his cabin into a night, in the stillness of the usual regulation blackout. And I wondered then. What could possibly be the thoughts that crossed his mind as he stood there on the eve of the day that could mean either victory or defeat? Here was the leader of our people about to share all the dangers, known and unknown, of an invading army. And that night, I knew he did not sleep, nor did he many nights before. References: 1.
