We gather here to celebrate achievement of the Special Olympics, itself, and those who compete. Before we lived here, Laura and I were fortunate to be involved with the Special Olympics in Texas. And I’ll never forget being a hugger at Texas Memorial Stadium. Such a wonderful experience. We’re so grateful for the Special Olympics. And so is America because #America at its best upholds the values of every person and the possibilities of every life. And the Special Olymp...ics is an example of America at its best, sharing with the entire world a spirit of #joy and #kindness. The story of our country is an ever-widening circle, a society in which everyone has a place and everyone has something to give. You brought that spirit into the lives of more than a million children and adults across the world, and I thank you for that. - President George W. Bush, December 13, 2001 From our collection: A program from the #holiday reception at the White House for members of the Special Olympics. In attendance was Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of President John F. Kennedy, who founded a camp for special needs children that became the Special Olympics in 1968. #SpecialOlympics #EuniceKennedyShriver

But the years since have been filled with memorable performances by a lady of incredible talent and style, energy, and beauty. To a collection that includes the Oscar, the Tony, the Emmy and the Grammy, Rita Moreno may now add the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and we give this honor with affection and appreciation.

Happy birthday Teddy Roosevelt! Our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt was born October 27, 1858. Prior to his 1901-1909 presidency, he served as governor of New York (18991900) and as the Assistant Secretary of the #Navy (18971898). As #president, he championed many Progressive Era policies, including the creation of the Food and Drug Administration, and established many new national parks, forests, and monuments. He also oversaw the start of construction of the Panama Can...al, and helped broker an end to the Russo-Japanese War, which won him the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize. Roosevelt was a conservationist, naturalist, and writer. For his impact on America, his face is depicted on Mount Rushmore, alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. President George W. Bush said of Roosevelt: "We remember many of our Presidents as leaders made for a unique moment in our history. President Roosevelt... was a man for all seasons. He was a soldier who won the Medal of Honor, a peacemaker who won the Nobel Prize. He was one of the world's most daring big game hunters, and a leading advocate for conservation of our country's natural resources. He was an intellectual who sometimes read several books a day... and he wrestled here at the White House... Nearly 100 years after his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt's legacy still endures here at the White House...Right across the door of the Oval Office is what was his former office, known as the Roosevelt Room. Above the fireplace hangs a portrait of the 26th President on horseback during the Spanish-American War. That portrait is a reminder -- when I look at it I think about the character and courage that is necessary for any President. For the past eight years, his legacy has been an inspiration to me. It will be an inspiration to the person who replaces me, and it will be an inspiration for all Presidents to come."

We can show the world what a great, compassionate and decent nation America is. I can do that through #diplomacy. I can do that through our actions, through the alliances we form. But #children all across #America can do it, as well -- can do it through letters and e-mails and pictures and drawings, and reaching out to boys and girls. - President George W.
